CAGE test is frequently used short alcoholism test that have been developed to detect alcoholism. Other alcohol screening tests comprises of elaborate ones with up to 100 questions and also short screening tests with 4or 5 questions.
Although shorter screening test may not be as precise and perceptive as the longer ones but none the less they help to screen alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence quite well which can be later assessed with more elaborate tests.
The CAGE test, the Michigan alcohol screening test ( MAST), the AUDIT test, T-ACE test are few popular alcohol screening tests used by healthcare centers to diagnose alcoholism. Following is a brief description of few of them.
The CAGE test is a short four question test that can diagnose alcohol addiction. It is one of the earliest and most frequently used alcohol screening tests, the disadvantage of this test is that it does not give correct assessment of white women, people older than middle age, Africans and Mexican Americans.
The Michigan alcohol screening test or MAST test is most commonly used. It comprises of 22 questions. It is the most accurate test to assess adolescent. The disadvantage of this test is its length it gets a bit difficult to score in a busy medical centre.
